Tree water uptake enhances nitrogen acquisition in a fertilized boreal forest – but not under nitrogen?poor conditions

چکیده

Understanding how plant water uptake interacts with acquisition of soil nitrogen (N) and other nutrients is fundamental for predicting responses to a changing environment, but it an area where models disagree. We present novel isotopic labelling approach which reveals spatial patterns N uptake, their interaction, by trees. The stable isotopes 15 2 H were applied small the forest floor in stands high low availability. Uptake surrounding trees was measured. sensitivity quantified statistical modelling. Trees high-N stand acquired twice as much low-N around half dependent on (2 enrichment). In contrast, there no positive effect uptake. conclude that tree only marginally flux toward root surface under conditions conditions, water-associated substantial. results suggest shift strategy conditions.

Individual size but not additional nitrogen regulates tree carbon sequestration in a subtropical forest

Recent studies have indicated that tree carbon accumulation in subtropical forests has been negatively affected by global change phenomena such as warming and drought. However, the long-term effect of nitrogen addition on plant carbon storage remains poorly understood in these regions. In this study, we conducted a 10-year field experiment examining the effect of experimental N addition on plan...

Tree Diversity Enhances Stand Carbon Storage but Not Leaf Area in a Subtropical Forest

Research about biodiversity-productivity relationships has focused on herbaceous ecosystems, with results from tree field studies only recently beginning to emerge. Also, the latter are concentrated largely in the temperate zone. Tree species diversity generally is much higher in subtropical and tropical than in temperate or boreal forests, with reasons not fully understood. Niche overlap and t...

Residual Long-Term Effects of Forest Fertilization on Tree Growth and Nitrogen Turnover in Boreal Forest

The growth enhancing effects of forest fertilizer is considered to level off within 10 years of the application, and be restricted to one forest stand rotation. However, fertilizer induced changes in plant community composition has been shown to occur in the following stand rotation. To clarify whether effects of forest fertilization have residual long-term effects, extending into the next rota...

Spatial separation of litter decomposition and mycorrhizal nitrogen uptake in a boreal forest.

Our understanding of how saprotrophic and mycorrhizal fungi interact to re-circulate carbon and nutrients from plant litter and soil organic matter is limited by poor understanding of their spatiotemporal dynamics. In order to investigate how different functional groups of fungi contribute to carbon and nitrogen cycling at different stages of decomposition, we studied changes in fungal communit...

Hemoglobin enhances oxygen uptake in larval zebrafish (Danio rerio) but only under conditions of extreme hypoxia.

The role of hemoglobin (Hb) in O(2) uptake by zebrafish larvae ranging in age from 5 to 42 days postfertilization was assessed under conditions of normoxia, moderate hypoxia and extreme hypoxia. This was achieved by exposing larvae with and without functional Hb to continuously declining oxygen levels (P(O(2))) in closed-system respirometers. Exposure to 5% CO for 2-4 h was used to render Hb ef...
